How Exercise slows the aging process

If you've been physically active all your life, you're probably already, physiological younger than your chronological age. But if you are lapsed exerciser or really haven't ever done much physical activity at all, you can still make significant headway in the fight against aging. So I wouldn't go as far as to say that exercise is the fountain of youth, evidence suggests that in many ways is the closest thing we've got. Here are some reasons why.

Exercise prevents the deterioration of muscle and bone. By some calculations most women begin losing about 1 percent of muscle mass per year after the age of forty; men begin losing muscle in their twenties. That loss of muscle tissue also contributes to a big loss of strength.

Exercise keeps age related diseases at bay.

Like strength training, cardiovascular exercises (like aerobics) helps you fight weight gain. Men are prone to gaining weight in their bellies all through their lives. Most women typically gain fat in their arms, legs and hips until menopause, when hormone level shifts and they begin storing what is known as intra-abdominal fat, located deep in the abdominal cavity. Remarkably cardiovascular exercises seems to target intra-abdominal fat.

Exercise changes the body at the cellular level.

Many of the anti-aging benefits of exercise don’t show up on cholesterol levels or on the scale, but they are significant nonetheless. Whenever there’s an outbreak of a flu virus or food poisoning, the elderly are among those who get hit the hardest. One reason that is likely is that the immune system’s ability to fight off Infection tends to decline with age. That said, several studies have found that physically active elderly people have greeter immune cell function than elderly people who don’t move much.

We also know that moderate exercise increases activity of natural killer cells (a type of immune cell that can destroy tumor and other harmful cells) in people of all ages, undoubtedly the reason regular exercisers get fewer colds and flu and miss significantly fewer days of work.
